I tell you, ever since google took over blogger & youtube, both sites have been a pain in the ***! Youtube has turned into spam central (even though the rules say NO paid advertising on it - google ignores all spam reports.) and blogger keeps giving me password errors.

This is the owner of Blue Bay and Blen's Family Restaurant... This is the people who wrote on there that Blen's was closing.. We are not closing we dont plan on closing and We closed Blue Bay cuz the rent was to high and bussnies went slowed down. So everyone before u post something on here make sure u get the right information from us then u can post it cause u think u aren't doing anything wrong by posting this but u are u are making the town think that we are shutting down.. hey niki, thanks for updating us - sorry it took so long for me to post back. I DID try to find out what happened wit blue bay, but like I said it was hard to understand what was being said (I have pretty crappy phonelines in my place - theyre older than I am :)) ). I also made it pretty clear that the info at that time wasnt definate, and that it could turn out to be false (STILL dont know wth happened with hardees).

If you could give the latest on what happened with Blen's, I'd sure appreciate it.

I have lived in Jacksonport going on 4 years. And having been living here I am very thankful for the supercenter to be built. I actually drive to Green Bay just to shop at the supercenter. I don't think this will deter tourists from shopping at their fancy little expensive shops at all. This will just help us locals actually be able to afford to keep living here and doing our jobs.

the tourist shops are NOT being targeted - what IS are places like econo, pick n save, bay pharmacy, griessens, wine cellar, door county hardware, etc. & if you drive all the way to green bay just to shop at a supercenter, then why the hell did you move to jacksonport - why didnt you just move to fricken green bay!?!?

According to word on the street, 5 businesses here in sturgeon bay have folded up in the last week or so.

& BOTH gannett & doorcountydailynews dropped the ball prefering to report on snow forts, XC skiing, & the death of a ****ing camel!

2 verified so far are hardees & blue bay restaurants.

Blue bay has a "for lease" message up on the sign, & a message on the door states the locks have been changed - which could mean the person/business was evicted.

Not much is known right now about hardees, except mention of the IRS being involved.

I'll update this post as more info comes in.

ALRIGHT, after a day of pounding the pavement, I've dug up the following info:

So far, there's 3 stories on this - that corporate shut them down, that someone in charge had a gambling problem (possibly embesslement), & that the IRS was involved in some way. What's known for sure is that at least 1 employee showed up for work the day they closed, & was told to turn around & go back home - that they were closing, pretty much 8 hours notice that she no longer had a job

BLUE BAY
STILL nothing definate - called the # listed on the sign(715-581-2041), and the man I spoke with I couldn't make out most of WHAT the hell he was saying. Some of it sounded like "people from overseas", "they left", & (I think) "no business", Though in his defense I'm pretty sure he was having the same problem understanding me (phone/line problems, maybe?)

Sturgeon Bay signs Wal-Mart agreement

The city of Sturgeon Bay voted unanimously Tuesday to sign a development agreement with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to build a new Supercenter on the city's east side.

City Administrator Steve McNeil detailed some of the highlights of the agreement as the contract was negotiated in closed session and then later approved. City Attorney Randy Nesbitt sent it off this week for Wal-Mart's signature.

"This agreement is not an obligation on the part of Wal-Mart to construct the Supercenter," McNeil said. "But they do want to sign a contract so they feel confident when they are buying the land of what their commitments are."

Chief among the city's concerns, McNeil said, is to protect the businesses and the traffic corridor along Egg Harbor Road so that the road remains open during construction. The proposed 120,000-square-foot Supercenter would replace the current Walmart at 1536 Egg Harbor Road.

The agreement details both public and private commitments and was sent to Wal-Mart's attorney, Debbie Tomczyk, for approval. Tomczyk has negotiated twists and turns the project has taken for years before the Supercenter won final unanimous Common Council approval in January. Under the agreement, the new store would open by March 1, 2012.

Wal-Mart had planned to close on the property by April, but the sale was postponed until a signed agreement was in hand. All obligations are contingent upon the company's acquisition of the property. Development plans would be finalized the rest of this year, with bids going out next spring and construction starting next year.

The agreement calls for the city to complete its public works no later than Oct. 31, 2011.

Some of the other highlights of the agreement shows Wal-Mart is responsible to:

Pay for Sturgeon Bay Utilities to upgrade the 14th Avenue  Booster Station, not to exceed $171,600.   
Construct and maintain a storm-water detention basin and  related storm-water facilities on the property.   
Reconfigure access points into and out of the property, per  the final plans approved by the city.   
Pay for a new traffic signal at the intersection of  Walmart's driveway with Egg Harbor Road.   
Pay for a new traffic signal at the intersection of 14th  Avenue and Egg Harbor Road.   
Pay for improvements to Egg Harbor Road from 14th Avenue  through the Walmart driveway access, including, but not limited to, pavement,  drainage facilities, curb and gutter, street lights, street trees, signs and  pavement markings.   
Contribute $151,500 to the city for future expansion of the  sidewalk system on Egg Harbor Road.   
In the event that Wal-Mart fails to timely complete the work  described, the city may assess special damages against the property in the  amount of $200 per day for each day that work remains substantially incomplete.

I don't know HOW the HELL they can be going through with building, when there's STILL the problem of the agreement they signed with Nash Finch saying that WM needs approval from all signors to expand! And where's the land coming from to expand Egg Harbor rd? More than likely the NIGHTINGALE, which would tie in to the other info I've heard that nightingale's folding up.... only the 1st of many thanks to the cult of WALFART.

And WHERE the HELL'S "fair enterprise" in all this??? Does anybody even fucking CARE anymore that SB's going to get flushed down the damned toilet!?!?!

Council To Take Up Wal-Mart Rezoning

Groundbreaking wouldn't be for another year-and-a-half, but another step in the Wal-Mart approval process could be taken at tonight's Sturgeon Bay City Council meeting. Members will be giving a first reading to a rezoning ordinance related to the proposed Supercenter on Egg Harbor Road. A second reading of the ordinance and a developer's agreement between the city and the retailer are also needed before the project gets the green light.

The Council will also take action on a Personnel Committee recommendation to change the shift structure of the Police Department, at least on a trial basis. Look for a separate story on that topic on DoorCountyDailyNews.com.

Tonight's meeting(01/19.10) starts at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Unless a lot of people turn out again tonight like when this shit first started, plain & simple - this town's FUCKED!

1/7/10 - Council Members Weigh In On Wal-Mart

The Wal-Mart issue has been discussed by the Sturgeon Bay City Council many, many times prior to Tuesday night's consideration of the retailer's final Planned Unit Development, so aldermen didn't spend a ton of time asking questions and making comments. But that didn't mean they didn't have things to say. Ron Vandertie didn't agree with an amendment dealing with the water supply, saying it can be dealt with at a later time.

At issue is whether the city needs to build a water tower or if the retailer's water needs can be met in a different way. Either way Wal-Mart would contribute to the cost.

Alderman Thad Birmingham said he doesn't like the look of the sign that's being proposed

The monument style sign would say "Wal-Mart" on the top and "Econo Foods" in smaller letters below. Community Development Director Marty Olejniczak says the sign would be backlit and feature a limestone-type base to give the sign more of a local look.

The Council ended up approving the final PUD by unanimous vote.

The Door County Highway Safety Commission has approved a series of improvements on Egg Harbor Road to enhance traffic flow and open the area to pedestrians and bicyclists for when the Wal-Mart Supercenter opens there in 2012.

Extended turn lanes and additional stoplights were some of the features in a revised plan that Sturgeon Bay City Engineer Tony Depies presented Thursday to the commission.
(& just HOW are they going to do this? To expand turn lanes they'll have to widen Egg Harbor Rd, which means they'll take land from the Nightengale, dig up graves & move em, etc!)

The center left turn lane in the 1500 block of Egg Harbor Road was lengthened for greater capacity, he said. The area was extended between 14th and Alabama streets. Wal-Mart is covering the improvement costs.

Stop signs are being added at the intersection of Egg Harbor Road and 14th Street and at the front entrance for the Wal-Mart development. A left turn lane will be added specifically for the entrance area at Wal-Mart.

"The intersection's absolute final design is still a little bit in flux," Depies said. "They're still getting some right-of-way from the cemetery just to the east of Wal-Mart. There will be signals at the entrance, as well as the intersection of 14th and Egg Harbor."

The plan also includes details on alternative routes during construction and diagram of the front of the store.

The plans also include details on the design and length of left- and right-hand turn lanes. Bicycle lanes will be added, and sidewalks will be added along Egg Harbor Road between Eighth and 14th streets near the Wal-Mart development.

"Putting in sidewalks is difficult because of the cost of construction," Depies said. "Every time they try to put sidewalks in, we receive some opposition, even when they're free."

A detour route will be established when the road is rebuilt, he said.

The proposal will go to the Door County Highway Committee for input in the coming weeks on the street improvements planned in anticipation of the Wal-Mart Supercenter expansion.

Initial response was positive from members of the Door County Highway Safety Commission.

Safety Commission Chairman Dan Austad said he was impressed with the safety aspects of the proposal.

"It looks good, there's no question about it," Austad said. "But the Highway Committee will have more say on the issue."

Highway Commissioner John Kolodziej said he expects to see a few final changes to the proposal before work begins next year. But some of the additions open the area up to pedestrians and bicyclists.

"I think the safety improvements are important," Kolodziej said. "One of the most critical things they need to have are sidewalks ... and the bicycle route. There is much greater pedestrian access."

Wal-Mart won unanimous approval Tuesday from Sturgeon Bay's Common Council to build a Supercenter behind its current store at 1536 Egg Harbor Road.

But the new store won't be ready until 2012.

"We were somewhat surprised of the timeframe," said Community Development Director Marty Olejniczak. "It's 2½ years away."

Wal-Mart submitted a preliminary schedule to go with its final Planned Unit Development plan that shows its property closing in April, completing construction development plans the rest of this year, bids going out in 2011 and construction starting next year.

The project still needs to go through two more rounds of approval with the council — first and second readings are required to amend the city code for zoning, Olejniczak said. The city and Wal-Mart also need to sign a development agreement, and until those steps are taken, there are no commitments.

The council tweaked a list of nine conditions that are part of the final approval. Alderman Steve Mann asked for language to be changed to include "a contribution from the developer for improvement of water storage and/or supply facilities as needed to supply and support the Wal-Mart store."

Previously, the agreement specified a water tower. An impact study done by Vierbicher of Madison said the construction of a 150,000-square-foot Supercenter likely would result in the need to construct a new municipal water tower estimated to cost $960,000.

The size of the store since has been scaled back to 120,000 square feet, but the Supercenter would trigger the need for increasing the water supply. An additional water tower already was included in a long-range utility plan by Sturgeon Bay Utilities, which owns the parcel behind Wal-Mart. Even without a Supercenter, a tower was anticipated as other development occurs near Egg Harbor Road.

SBU Operations Manager Cliff White was at Tuesday's meeting and told the council a water tower is just one option. Another plan is to build a booster station. SBU is modeling the project to see which option is most cost-effective. Either way, Wal-Mart agreed to pay its share of the project.

For a water tower, White estimated Wal-Mart's need would be about 40,000 gallons, or about one-fourth of what a water tower would hold. An estimate of $250,000 is not totally accurate, he said, because final plans are not yet known but soon will be — in time for the city and Wal-Mart to sign an agreement. The Vierbicher study estimated Wal-Mart would generate a net revenue benefit of $7,000 to $10,000 for the utility and would help lower overall utility costs for residents.

White said additional water is not needed immediately, even with a new Supercenter. The increased capacity covers redundancy or worst-case scenario situations.

"For example, if there were a fire at the store and their sprinkler system would go off," he said, "would we have enough water for other businesses and homes in the area? We don't need it now and we may have gotten the cart ahead of the horse."

Also attending Tuesday's meeting was Mike Tadych from EconoFoods, who told the council he would like to see an additional drive between the stores.

"By putting one entryway, it will deter customers from going between the sites, and we'll lose that 'one-stop shop,'" Tadych said.

He also said trees should be moved on the plan to improve the line of sight to EconoFoods. He asked the council to delay its decision and asked for another traffic analysis.

But the consensus was that details could be reached with city staff, as one of the conditions of approval gives staff latitude to continue negotiations.

Alderman Thad Birmingham didn't like the look of the new monument sign displaying Wal-Mart's name and Econo Foods' below it. Olejniczak said Wal-Mart redesigned the sign with limestone and it was made larger to accommodate Econo Foods' name. To do so, the arch was removed.

"No matter how well Wal-Mart camouflages the sign," Birmingham said, "local residents will still find Econo Foods."

Birmingham said he also would like to see more sidewalk access in the plans for anticipated additional development in the area.

"We could finish connecting the dots and complete that puzzle and allow residents to access that," he said. "Otherwise, I think Wal-Mart has gone out of their way to accommodate the city, and I would commend them for that."

The Sturgeon Bay City Council made it official Tuesday night, setting a primary for February 16. City Clerk Stephanie Reinhardt says six mayoral candidates filed their papers by Tuesday's deadline: Barb Allmann, Perry Andropolis, Thad Birmingham, Dennis McIntosh, John Wade and John Williamson.

Reinhardt says the cost of the primary is estimated to be $9,600 with the county covering $3,300 of that. Reinhardt says the city did budget for four elections, so the item is covered in the budget.

Mayor Tom Voegele announced in December that he would not be seeking another term.

When walmart built, they signed an agreement with Our Family to the effect that any major expansion riquires approval of the other signers of the aggreement,

OF's lawyer showed up at a council meeting, and layed it out in no uncertain terms that....
OUR FAMILY WILL NOT AGREE TO WALMART'S EXPANSION!

YES! a major champion's taken up the cause!

City Council Meeting - 08/21/07

Well, this is going to be a little heavier on the information than my usual postings......

For starters, who should be seen entering city hall to attend the meeting but the LOCAL WALMART MANAGER, with two burly types in tow.... as if walmart was going to resort to mafia-type "strong arm" tactics.

THEN, just after roll call (lol), Alderman Mann Decided to try more "person agenda pushing....

Mann: "Mister Mayor, I also would like you to, for the next regularly scheduled council meeting, I would like you add - as my request - was that, we, add to the next common council agenda an item regarding the composition or the make up of the city plan commission. I won't go into any much history other than to say that, that ah, I requested and we looked at it, and it didn't make the agenda tonight so I just wanted to make sure it was on next time. And, my basis for this is, ah, common council code, ah, 2.02 peren 3, ah c - 'agen,' ok, 'the agenda, once adopted shall be the order of the business, and any new business may be introduced as part of the agenda for the next meeting of the common council.'

Mayor Voegele: "Surely we'll consider that, Mister Mann."

( long 3 second pause...) Mann: "CONSIDER it??????... Ok..... I hope you'd do more than that..."

Myaor Voegele: "We will consider it."

ROFL! In the past, he's tried telling the mayor what to do, AND even tried snooping over the mayor's shoulder when the Mayor was reading something - does this guy EVER know when to quit??? (By the way, it WAS noticed that Alderman Mann has apparently been moved from just to the right of the Mayor, to over near the left end of the "horse-shoe". :)) )

During the public comments for item #13 - Large retail ordinance, a number of people spoke. the most notable were Tom Wagner (who made the threat that if Walmart is not allowed to expand, they COULD sue the city), and a LAWYER FROM MILWAUKEE REPRESENTING WALMART!

(I was going to post - word for word - their statements, but the vhs tape used to record the meeting screwed up partway through Tomczak's statement and continued most of the way through Wagner's. Rest assured that the meeting WILL be retapred, and this post edited to include those statements AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.)

It should be noted that Walmart's milwaukee attourney Debbie Tomczak has so far traveled up here from milwaukee AT LEAST TWICE(that is known at this time) for the express purpose of speaking in favor of walmart expanding in Sturgeon Bay - the other documented time was for the common council meeting on August 7th, 2007.

In the end, the city council approved the changes to the "Big Box" Ordinance - changes which INCLUDED REMOVING ANY SIZE CAP.

Alderman Vandertie, hower, DID bring up an interesting point concerning walmart's expansion: That in addition to the Economic & fiscal impact studies, they will ALSO need to apply for anexation.

THE FIGHT IS FAR FROM OVER, MY FRIENDS! "THE FAT LADY HAS YET TO SING" - so there is still hope.

And a new nationwide(& hopefully WORLDWIDE in the future) group is in the process of being formed.... caling themselves the "Sons Of Liberty" with the goal of drawing together ALL seperate local groups under one united banner to fight against such evil and greed as represented my Walmart, Gannett, and others. WE MUST TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK IF IT IS TO EXIST!

As of about an hour & a half ago, Sturgeon bay fire dept responded to a report of heavy smoke at the holiday motel - right at the east end of the downtown bridge.

Get this, they have 2 pumpers, 1 mini pumper, 1 tanker, 1 ladder truck, and 1 rescue truck from the city.... AS WELL AS 1 pumper, 1 mini pumper, and 1 rescue from the southern door fire dept...... And they have only started (as of this writing) to try and put it out!!!!! Even then, there are only 3 people actively fighting the fire - the rest are just standing around WATCHING!!!
WHAT.... THE..... F***!?!?!?!?!?! When did the fire dept turn wimps??? And WHY are the citizens paying for all these firefighters when they're not doing anything???

This personally makes me SERIOUSLY wonder about the usefulness of having a mostly part-time fire dept. It was as if most of them only responded so that they could claim another paycheck....

Major Structure Fire Devastates Holiday Motel

Traffic was redirected through Sturgeon Bay for three hours yesterday after a fire destroyed the attic and second level of the Holiday Motel. Sturgeon Bay Fire Chief Tim Herlache said no one was injured and the fire was put out before it swept through the rooms on the upper level. Herlache said because of smoke and water damage most of the motel will need to be gutted.
Manager Anna Sacks said the first thing on her mind when she heard there was a fire was the safety of those staying at the Holiday. The community support was beyond belief, according to Sacks.

Fire Chief Herlache said the emergency call came in at 11:19 a.m. The call reported that smoke was coming from the roof. When the department arrived there were no flames poking through the structure. Herlache talked about the department’s reaction to the smoke.

Firefighters used 5,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. Herlache said the American Red Cross went above and beyond again. He also thanked Stone Harbor for hosting the displaced Holiday Motel residents.
The Southern Door County Fire Department and Door County Emergency Services provided mutual aid at the scene. Southern Door sent three rigs and 15 firefighters and 25 responded from the Sturgeon Bay department......

Fire damages Holiday Motel

A fire, which may have started in a second-floor bathroom and spread to the attic, damaged the Holiday Motel on N. Second Avenue in downtown Sturgeon Bay, Sunday morning.

Thick, brown smoke poured from the attic on both sides of the motel around 11:15 a.m. and grew thicker over the next hour, blanketing much of downtown Sturgeon Bay in a haze.

The hotel was full at the time, according to owner Pat mAcdonald, and several people had to be awakened and told to get out of the motel.

No one was injured.

More than 30 firefighters, including many brought in off-duty, responded from the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department with support from Southern Door.....

CRIST ON A FIRE ENGINE!!!! No matter HOW MANY TIMES they're told we don't WANT one, walmart is STILL preasuring the city to let them build a f***ing supercenter!

NOW they've resorted to their usual tricks of whining to the county board & recruiting gullible citizens into supporting then in their efforts!

184,000 square feet - and that's just the building! Build + parking lot/retaining pods will cover an area bordered by a cemetary, the house behind Econo foods, 14th ave., and egg harbor road! What they want to build is larger than the area taken up by cherry point mall! Don't believe me? See for yourself in the images below!

And of course, roughly 1/4 of the size of their actual supercenter building will be devoted to GROCERIES! With how predatory & bullyish walmart is, how long do you think places like Pick n Save & Econo Foods will last before walmart drives them out? And what happens to the employees of those two stores when they close? No doubt all of them will wind up having to apply at walmart.... most will likely be hired. BUT - there will be some who aren't.... Where will THEY go, when walmart starts running OTHER STORES out of business???

WHEN wil you people REALIZE that walmart is not God - they're not even your friend! They are just using you to get what they want, which is.........

Council To Discuss Egg Harbor Road

The Egg Harbor Road renovation project, rezoning part of the Hopf Property and community sensitive design elements will all be things discussed at tonight's Sturgeon Bay Common Council meeting. The issue of improving Egg Harbor Road has hit the council agenda again. After an initial presentation by City Engineer Tony Depies, the issue was turned over to the Finance/Purchasing and Building Committee. The item on tonight's agenda is a recommendation to proceed with the Two Way Left Turn Lane design on Egg Harbor Road in conjunction with the Traffic Impact Analysis that will be needed for any WalMart expansion. Including guard rails along the bike lane will also be discussed.

Also tonight, the council will look at zoning map amendments for a parcel located off of Highway 42/57, just south of the Sturgeon Bay known as the Hopf property. The council will consider rezoning some parts from Agricultural to a combination of single, two or multi family residential.

A recommendation from the Finance Committee to transfer $2,500 from general fund reserves to cover the city's financial participation in 2007 Legislative Days will also be considered.

In addition, the council will vote on paying one-third of the actual cost for relocation of transmission wire to allow for timely construction of the bridge approach for the Maple to Oregon Bridge.

Tonight will also be Mayor Dennis McIntosh's last meeting. McIntosh will give a report tonight that will include a review, critique, observation and his perspective with regard to the performance of Sturgeon Bay during the last 36 months. Along with McIntosh, tonight may be the last meeting for a couple other council members. Seats 1, 3, 4,5 and 7 are up for re-election. If available, election results will be announced at the end of tonight's meeting. Tonight's Sturgeon Bay Common Council meeting will be in the Council Chambers at 8:00PM.

A member of Door County Residents For Fair Enterprise believes the Sturgeon Bay City Council should put on the brakes to the Egg Harbor Road renovation project. The item on tonight's council agenda is a recommendation from the Finance/Purchasing & Building Committee to proceed with the "Two Way Left Turning Lane" on Egg Harbor Road in conjunction with the Traffic Impact Analysis that will be needed for any WalMart expansion and to include guard rails along the bike lane. Member Christie Weber believes this item regarding the Egg Harbor Road improvement, has hidden text that should be made more clear. She says along with the improvements is verbiage that includes approving the water run off plan and a third lane for a Super WalMart.
Weber says while everyone else is busy helping with election night and waiting for the results in Sturgeon Bay, the city staff and Mayor will be busy trying to force the city, under false pretences, into paying for Super WalMart's road widening improvements and water run off costs with a simple "yes" vote to pave Egg Harbor Road. Weber does not understand why this topic was not discussed at the Plan Commission and she is concerned about pedestrian safety with the added lane. In the current plan, there is nothing about adding sidewalks.
Weber is calling on all residents to attend tonight's meeting to send a message to the Common Council and the mayor. She is hoping that the council will vote this issue down until public comment from all residents is heard. Weber hopes that by their presence, some council members will reconsider the issue and vote against the recommendation.

You know, I'm getting more than a little tired (read - "PISSED OFF") over the constant scheming by the snobs who only think of themselves. EVERYONE, please be sure to show up down at city hall tonight - try to be there early (say around 7:45pm) just in case they try to throw us off by dealing with it early (as they've tried to do with "secret plans" twice in the past). We need to protect not only ourselves but our neighbors as well. NOBODY - either friend or foe - should wind up unemployed because of their self-centered tactics.

We MUST protect and defend one another - to stand alone, individually against these threats to our well being will result in our defeat.

Door County citizens urged to oppose Wal-Mart expansion

It is critical that the Mayor and City Council hear community reaction to the proposed SuperCenter. Therefore, Fair Enterprise has written a petition. It can be sent to the council via e-mail, or if you prefer, it can be edited, then sent. You may also decide to write your own letter. Additionally, if you live in the city of Sturgeon Bay, you may want to talk to your alderman.
In a recent conversation with a city alderman, Betty Parsons says, "I was told the council thinks the new proposal meets with resident approval, as there have been almost no statements of concern from constituents. So, input is critical and your opinion could well make a difference."
Fair Enterprise encourages citizens to take a few minutes to state your position to elected officials, as the community's integrity, environmental health and economic viability must be protected.

When I become mayor I've told people I want to open up those council meetings, definately committee meetings, people have said 'well how are you going to do that? it's going to be chaos - you're going to have 2 or 3 people that always come there and they've got something to say and nobody can get a word in edgewise.' But it can be done - where there's a will there's a way - and a lot of the people I've talked to say that that's very important. So that's my number one issue - to improve communication in the city, and open it up so everyone get's an opportunity to be involved in the process.

Now I ask you - WHICH of them do you think will be a better mayor - someone who puffs up their chest patting themselves on the back for all their accomplishments? Or someone down to earth who actually cares about others instead of only thinking of himself???

SO, for the past month I have been TRYING to get a letter to the editor printed - a response to a pro-walfart letter written by a VERY clueless old woman. Warren Bluhm has from the start stonewalled me, claiming I do not exist. Finally, I scanned in the front of a package with my name and address on it - shipped in august 2005 as further evidence that I DO in fact exist.

This is in response to Mrs. Julius Vertz and her letter on walmart.

This great nation was founded on freedom. to state there is no way to win
so why try makes it sound as if you are NOT an American.

It is true - walmart WOULD lower prices, but do you know how they do it?
They do it by dictating to those farmers and manufacterers the price they will buy products for. What that means is each year, walmart expects those suppliers to sell at a lower price than the year before, which winds up pushing them to export all production overseas, costing american's their jobs.

Soon, despite moving production overseas, the prices walmart demands are so low that those American companies wind up going totally out of business.
Walmart does not care about us. They do not care how many people they hurt, or what laws they break (and they have broken A LOT of them, and been busted for it) or how many water supplies they poison. They only care about getting gullible people into their stores to buy cheap junk that the overseas labor winds up cutting corners on just to break even.
Saying you want a supercenter up here is like screaming out loud "I love
satan". Is that what you want people to see in you - someone who wants cheap junk and will sell not only their soul but everyone else's to get it?

By the way, like you I'm not rich - far from it. But I REFUSE to accept

Sturgeon Bay mayoral candidate Mike Felhofer held a press conference yesterday afternoon to explain in detail his platform. The mayoral hopeful used the opportunity to express the importance of fostering good community development through the residential, industrial and commercial avenues. Felhofer said the city has begun to improve its development process with the passing and amending of the “big box” zoning ordinance. Felhofer said the ordinance is not sufficient by itself.
The Sturgeon Bay mayoral candidate also laid out a plan for improving the city’s development infrastructure. He said that can be done by creating a long-range “green infrastructure” plan. Felhofer said development of that plan, regulations and incentive programs would help to insure preservation and enhancement of the City’s natural infrastructure. The city plan commissioner also stressed that his experience is what sets him apart from his opponent. Felhofer was elected to the city council in 2000, was a member of the finance committee, community protection and services committee, Door County Library Board, Sturgeon Bay Visitors and Convention Bureau board and was appointed to Sturgeon Bay budget and Services Ad Hoc Committee.
Over the next several weeks, Felhofer plans to go door to door to talk with the citizens of Sturgeon Bay. At the press conference, he stressed that this will be a time for him to listen to the real issues that face people in the city every day.

Felhofer heard a report that when a Supercenter opens in a community, the price of groceries drops approximately 17%. He equates that to about six weeks of free groceries per year. The Senior Manager for Public Affairs with Wal-Mart for Wisconsin Lisa Nelson said the discount retailer's real estate team will be in the City of Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday. Wal-Mart has a meeting with the city staff scheduled for January 30. City Administrator Kevin O' Donnell will be holding the meeting with the Wal-Mart people and said he will release the information that has been discussed behind closed doors after the fact. For much of 2006 concerned residents came together to start the "Stop the Big Box Movement." From what Lisa Nelson had to say, they have lost that battle. Wal-Mart has plans to add to their existing facility.
Two summers ago, picketing and numerous letters to the editor were weekly occurrences over the "Stop the Big Box" issue. Nelson said the planned expansion will be more amiable to the people of Sturgeon Bay.The Senior Manager for Public Affairs with Wal-Mart for Wisconsin said they are still working out some details. The meeting next week will bring a lot of clarity to this issue. Employees of McClure Engineering Associates were taking readings on the land last week. Surveyors got all of the information needed during their time in Sturgeon Bay throughout the week of January 15. McClure Engineering has an office in Milwaukee.According to the McClure Engineering Associates website the company is continuing their business philosophy of personal service and responsiveness their clients needs. They have expanded into a multi-office, multi-discipline Midwest regional consulting firm. Wal-Mart representatives plan to meet with city of Sturgeon Bay staff Tuesday, Jan. 30, to discuss the possibility of expanding the retailer’s existing store on Egg Harbor Road into a Supercenter.

Wal-Mart public affairs senior manager Lisa Nelson said details are not confirmed and the meeting with City staff is preliminary.“The city has not seen a conceptual site plan yet, so this is an exciting first step to get their feedback and input,” Nelson said. “We’ve looked at a lot of different sites with different community organizations that have something at stake, such as the Department of Transportation. Expansion on the current site in back of the existing store eliminates the concern of leaving another empty big box.”Nelson said Tuesday’s meeting is a preliminary discussion about applications and what information the city will need from Wal-Mart. A construction timeline depends on when the company gets plan approval, Nelson said. It is not a public meeting, according to City Administrator Kevin O’Donnell. He did not give any specific information about the meeting.“They asked to meet with us,” O’Donnell said. “We’ve been encouraging them from the beginning, if they’re going to expand the facility, to look at their existing site. “Months back, they indicated they were doing that, didn’t hear from them for a long time, and now we’ve heard from them.
”The anti-big box group Door County Residents for Fair Enterprise released a statement Friday morning in support of Wal-Mart’s expansion on the existing site. “By dropping the other devastating sprawl relocation sites from consideration,” wrote Kyra Valentine, spokeswoman for Fair Enterprise, “this stopped the creation of new competing commercial districts and unfair competition for our existing businesses.“We feel it’s a win,” Valentine continued. “We’re optimistic and it’s great that Wal-Mart wants to stay within the existing business district. We’re happy that sprawl is not occuring. We’re not going to pass judgment or form an opinion until (Wal-Mart) presents an official plan. We hope the new expansion design will take into consideration the economic and environmental impact.”The company had previously looked at property along State 42-57 and Alabama Street, but the city turned down a rezoning request for that land last summer.

What those IDIOTS at Fair Enterprise don't seem to GET.... is that ANY supercenter ANYWHERE in Sturgeon Bay is going to force many other businesses OUT of business! By turning their normal store on Egg Harbor road into a supercenter (Which includes a huge grocery dept, likely a gas station, and more) Econo foods, Pick n save, Autozone, Bay Pharmacy, Phillmart, Butch's auto, Subway, and the former Cenex gas station up on 18th will ALL wind up being forced out. Where will all of those unemployed people find work? SOME will wind up working at the very place the made them unemployed, Others will have to sell everything they own just to keep food on the table.

ANOTHER thing none of you are looking at is a service that Econo Foods provides - namely DELIVERY! During the spring especially, when the freighters set sail, Econo foods reprovisions those ships. Do you think walmart will take over when they force Econo to close?

I want to stray off the walfart topic for this post to comment on a continuing problem that is NOT being properly dealt with.

The problem?
SCHOOL SHOOTINGS!

You ever notice how teachers tend to tell those being bullied to "just ignore them" and refuse to do anything about it??? and how school officials waste huge amounts of money on security to stop bully victims from bringing weapons into school - in effect dealing with the EFFECT instead of the cause??? Why is that? Are they STUPID? Do they want to turn our schools into a form of incarceration?

WHAT THE F*** ARE THEY THINKING OF????

What kind of weird ass logic is spending $10,000's of dollars per school on metal detectors, armed guards, sniffer dogs, and more - when at most hiring a couple people to patrol the halls stopping bullying would be SO MUCH CHEAPER????

And then you have the LEGAL aspect of it - NEGLIGENCE by the teachers and school staff!

Any teacher or school official who looked the other way while this kid was being bullied should be charged as an acessory to murder. They had the chance to do something before this happened, yet ignored it while singling out the victim for "rules harrassment".

My own nephew could have become like this kid. In school, he was being messed with BIGTIME! The teachers wouldn't do jack sh** about it! Fortunately for him, I'm not lazy like most other americans. When I found out about it, and the fact that even the other members of our family wouldn't do anything..... I DID! I showed up during reccess to see several kids shoving him around - and NOT in a playing manner. I walked up to my nephew, put my hand on his shoulder, and stared down the bullies for close to a minute before telling them "no more. If he's starting crap with you, you come tell me. if you push him around after this I'll make SURE you regret it." There were never any problems on either side after that.

Teach your kids that if they see someone else being bullied, they should take an active role in trying to stop it! Even if the get hit by the bully for it, don't you think getting hit is better than getting shot and killed???

A reprieve, and a loss

Well, only around 50 people showed this this time, no doubt because they scheduled the meeting the day after a federal holiday.

The new council chambers are smaller than the old ones - WTH???? It's like they don't expect or want people to show up for the meetings. Poor Dan (the Chief of police) wound up playing go-for, dragging in plush office chairs from the different employee offices (which looked like they cost around $200 each).

The FIRST public hearing - GREAT SCOTT - took about 2 hours!!!!!!!!!

The comment that stuck out the most was made by a transplanted Brit (who earned a lot of instant respect by stating):

If you'll look behind me, I think, you're in the minority"

When it was all said and done, the city council voted to table the anexation.

They then moved on to changes in the "Big Box" ordinance.

After a shorter period of public comments, the city council voted to approve the current changes and accepted it as is - WITHOUT a size cap, and WITHOUT a definate impact study on local businesses, opting instead to study JUST the impact on city services.

In other words, THIS FIGHT IS NOT OVER! We as concerned citizens MUST redouble our efforts, not only to oppose the commercial developement out there, but also to get the word out to EVERYONE in this county!

The document regarding next tuesday's business agenda for the city council.... is OVER 60 PAGES!!!!!!!

Included in the document is every little detail from meetings of the last several months, much of it having nothing to do with the anexation! Purchases for the new government building, purchases of services and equipment for various city dept.'s, expense lists, ANOTHER ANEXATION for the duluth ave area, and S***LOADS more!

It's as if they (city government) is trying to make it as hard as possible to find it. Oh, it's there alright. but you have to go through 3/4's of the document before you get to it.

Even then, they decided to throw in every little detail, such as listing the codes & laws word for word, in an attempt to bore and/or confuse people.

Damariscotta, Maine, Rejects Wal-Mart and Endorses Size Cap

On Tuesday, voters in the small town of Damariscotta, Maine, overwhelming approved a local law barring stores over 35,000 square feet (about the size of a medium grocery store).
The vote puts an end to Wal-Mart's plans to build a 187,000-square-foot supercenter in this village of just 2,000 people.
The measure was approved by a 62 to 38 percent margin in what officials say may be the largest election turnout in the town's history. More than 1,200 ballots were cast, representing about 80 percent of voters.
Damariscotta has a lively downtown and numerous locally owned businesses, including an 85-year-old grocery store, a pharmacy, bookstore, hardware store, and department store.
There are already three Wal-Mart stores to the north, west, and south of town, each about thirty minutes away. Last year, Wal-Mart announced its intention to further saturate the region by opening a supercenter on the outskirts of Damariscotta.

Let's review, shall we? "LOOKS LIKE A WARZONE" Is commonly heard in regards to dizaster areas, or kids rooms (lol). The term "BECOME A WARZONE" is used to denote a scene of chaos or wild behavior (such as a big party).

NOW, the term "LEAVE TOWN IN A HURRY" generally refers to a person or group who are in trouble for wrongdoing or who were caught in the act.

THEREFORE, DRBEAR's comments of "I think Homeland Security would be interested." Could be taken, and in fact very likely IS, an attempt at intimidation in an effort to silence a critic of his crooked friends - be they GANNETT, the city government, or WALMART. Then you also have the deliberate "mountain out of a mole hill" attempt, Claiming I am threatening others to try and cause me needless problems.

Just so everyone will know and be forewarned - Trying to intimidate someone like me is a stupid thing to do. Instead of scaring me, it pisses me off to the point of wanting to kick your a** up into orbit. In other words, if you're thinking of trying it against me....

MICHAEL FELHOFER, are you brain dead or what??? How exactly do you figure that walmart is not as bad as people say??? Do you REALIZE that YOUR job in banking is ALSO THREATENED by them???? Yes, they are attempting to start their own banking division. And if you believe them when they say "It's for in house credit card transactions only" then you should NOT be on the planning commision! All you need to do is look at their past actions to understand that have the habit of LYING to get what they want! They do not give any thought whatsoever to contaminating the environment, lying, using dishonest tactics(such as dropping their prices below retail to drive all other businesses out), and anything else they dream up - just so long as they squeaze a few more dollars into their corporate pockets!

Consider yourself LUCKY! I don't know about others there last night, but I would have liked nothing better than to jump over that desk and back you into a corner - not only for your attitude but your ignorance as well!

MAN, you should have seen it! 100+ people Marched 2 blocks down the main street towards city hall on both sides of the street! Once they arrived, they began marching around & around the block containing city hall, being led by a guy using a washtub as a drum, pounding in time with chanting such as "This is what democracy looks like", "Just say no!" and "What do we want - SMART GROWTH. When do we want it - NOW!"

Cars going past were honking horns and giving thumbsup signs in support! A camera crew arrived from WFRV channel 5, the local CBS affiliate from green bay, followed by one of their remote "live broadcast" vans(pictures from their footage below)!

The end result??? The city council voted 7-0 to reject walmart's request for anexation! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now there is a planning commision meeting tomorrow night at 7pm, where a big box size cap will be reviewed.

Remember when I went down & talked to Knappen about not printing anti walmart letters to the editor? WELL, it seems that I was RIGHT! As the scan of a printout shows, the advocate REFUSED to print an ad showing what is going on.

In spite of all the claims that Walmart has no intention of building a supercenter up here, I would warn EVERYONE not to let your guard down - they have the nasty little habit of misdirection and outright lies.

One city in Ohio found that out the hard way. Walmart wanted to build a huge building, the city council began working on a size cap, and walmart abandoned the plan. THEN, when the city dropped it's idea of a size cap - thinking walmart was gone - WALMART rushed in and built before the city could do anything.

Want to know just how much space a supercenter would take up here in sturgeon bay? The composite photo on the left is to scale within aprox. 2 feet (meaning if you were to blow it up lifesize, there would only be slight size difference between cars in the lot & cars on the highway)

As you can see, a supercenter is HUGE! It dwarfs all the other so called "Bix Boxes" in both building size AND overall size - coming close to the size of cherry point mall!

In the Door County Advocate, Our excellent and totally honest (COUGH bullshit CUOGH) Mayor Dennis McIntosh Claimed that neither the land sounth of town had been annexed, nor that he has had any contact with Walmart outside of meeting with the local WM manager.

He held a press conference about it - yet no-one against walmart was allowed to attend (Christie Weber was refused, and I've heard of a couple others who tried to attend to report it on various news sites/blogs were turned away.

What do I say? DO NOT EXPECT HONESTY FROM MCINTOSH! I have known him since he was Capt. of the police dept, and I can tell you that he is far from honest. Others Who know him will tell you the same. A man with the initials of CK tried to speak to him, and Mayor McIntosh noticed CK and immediately turned and hurried away - as if he were afraid of answering questions. CK is only one of many who have noticed what could be called "Suspicious behavior" by our mayor.

HE IS HIDING SOMETHING.

WELL...... I missed the meeting. (D'OH!) Fortunately, Several people I know went to it. From the initial report this morning, around half the auditorium was filled - including several members of the city council AND members of the county board.

Apparently, one of the council members was made to look like an idiot - the other left at some point not specified. And the county board members seem to be against the "big box" plan by the city. :D

If the tapes turned out, I'll post a transcript of the meeting up here by monday.

Door County Fair Enterprise, in addition to the petition, has also been offering FREE yard signs similar to the ones you see out during elections. THEY'RE EVERYWHERE! Just traveling down Michigan Street, I counted 12 of them between 12th ave & 4th ave! There is ALSO going to be a meeting at the SB high school on thursday (March 9th) at 7pm. I hope to be allowed to tape it using a micro recorder, as well as get a general count of just how many people don't want the supercenter (I think the auditorium holds something like 300 seats - so it MIGHT be "standing room only")

Door County Fair Enterprise has been cirulating a petition against the supercenter. I don't know how many others have been going around with the sheets, but if my own rounds were any indication most people are indeed against the supercenter - many of the people I asked were SO opposed to it that if the city council plays dumb and ignores the petition, there could be a riot!

Only 2 people didn't sign - 1 refused, the other said they'd sign it but had to go get a pen - then hid out in the office till I left. If you don't want to sign, fine - I won't hold it against you. BUT, Saying you will do something, then running off to hide? There's no honor in that, and it REALLY pissed me off (pardon the language). I think that it's safe to say that even TRUMP would get physically hostile at that! This incident, coupled with her heavily biased hiring practices, means that it's time to crank up the heat. :D (COUGHdollargeneralCOUGH)

People are now off their butts, and let me tell you, WE GOT US AN ARMY the likes of which this county's never seen! God help those who rile up the common men(and women)!

Forum disappears

At some point around noon yesterday, an anti-walmart forum - http://forum.walmartsucks.com/ - ceased to exist. It's unknown exactly what happened, but I suspect WALMART has restarted it's web censorship campaign. If you're not aware of it, back in the late 90's, walmart had an aggresive stance towards any negative sites online. Even now, walmart is the ONLY company that does this, as can be evidenced by the continued existance of sites like "BestBuySucks", "KmatSucks" and others.

I am attempting to contact the admins & owner of WMS, to confirm what happened.

Door County Advocate - pro-walmart?

Over the past month, I've noticed something in the Advocate that disturbed me to some degree. There have been very few letters to the editor speaking out against Walmart, while at the same time ALOT of lettershave been published in support of them. Why is this so disturbing? Because I myself have written several letters, and I know of others who have written to speak out, yet so far none of those letters have been printed. The first letter I sent was about a month ago.

I stopped down at the office today, and spoke with Joe (Knappen) about it. He says they're printed in the order they're recieved, but I don't know. SO, I will wait a little longer, to see if that is indeed the case. If not, I rev up operation "MARQUEE", which in short will be printing those anti-walmart letters and posting them on boards all over town(wicked grin).

And I know I promised to post that person's name, but I've also called in artillery on them so I want to see if we can break through his barriers and make him see the truth about what Walmart's REALLY up to before I go putting his name up in lights.

And the Walmart banking information that walmart supporters are claiming is a union plot? IT'S NO PLOT, as these actual news reports show!

They did? When/who/what? Can you document this assertion? When did WalMart drive out Target? Door County Hardware? Younkers? Did KMart leave because of WalMart? Or for other economic reasons, like mismanagement? Restructuring? OK, Prange Way went, but didn't they go out of business statewide for other reasons? (Not my favorite store, so I didn't shed any tears over this one.) The claim you just made is often repeated. I'm not sure how valid it is, but even if it is, so what? Isn't that allowed? And if not, who will be the arbitrator of what price to charge and what product line to carry, if not the market? Has the Soviet Union's experiment with central planning convinced you that the marketplace cannot be trusted? The "driving the little guy out of the market, then raising prices" argument might have made sense years ago, but it has very little impact now. WalMart's biggest competitor is not Target, but the Internet. WM raises prices, I buy online at the drop of a byte. Unless you can come up with a scheme to corner the Internet, this claim is only hot air.

That's certainly worth a consideration. We might have to put up with the employees from MacDonald's rushing over to apply at the new WalMart store -- now that would be a tragedy. Because, according to this seemingly unfavorable site, WalMart's wages are $8.23 an hour. According to a sign I saw last week at Sturgeon Bay's largest MacDonalds, their starting pay is $6.50 to $7.00 per hour. Don't get trampled in the rush for better pay. What does the average clerk at a downtown boutique or Younkers make? I don't know; I'm really asking, but I'll bet it's not much more than these figs.

Accusations are easily made. I have no personal proof of any of this, and it is unlikely that good proof can be made; if it could, I would expect more court cases than there already are. Anyone can cry "foul!" in a loud voice. That's not how court cases are decided and how scientific principles are discovered. I reserve the right to be skeptical about things I cannot conclusively prove to myself. And even if all these accusations are true, there are remedies that can be and should be pursued. Laws, contracts, unionizing, boycotts are some that come to mind, and I support anything legal that gets promises to be kept. If you feel that the conduct of a merchant is the most important thing to you, as opposed to prices, location, selection, hours, etc., then please don't shop or apply for employment there. For others don't share your values or priorities and do not wish to be told how to live their lives by someone who claims to be holier-than-thou. But if you are using these unsupported accusations as an excuse to prohibit a merchant from building in this town, you have stepped over the line. Your rights end where mine begin, Sir. I have no right to tell you where to shop and you have no right to tell me. I say, build the store and find out what people think with their wallets.

A losing battle?

I am a year round resident of the city of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin(Pop. about 9,000). Why am I doing this? Because the city is currently CONSIDERING allowing WALMART to build a supercenter. To make matters worse, most residents apparently have no clue what the company is REALLY like - and a number of them (mostly well to do types like realtors and such) are actually trying to help them gain approval!

If you've been reading the local paper(Door County Advocate), You've no doubt seen that Christie Weber has started a group to try and stop it. I AM NOT A PART OF IT. I am an individual, just trying to protect a number of good friends who work at places that will be forced to close should the supercenter be allowed.

I have been tracking Walmart's tactics since the late 90's, and with all the information I've seen I can tell you with absolute certainty that if it's built Pick N save, Econo Foods, Greisen's appliance, Dunham's sporting goods, Autozone, Bay Pharmacy, Butch's auto, Malvetz furniture, 2 convenience store's, and even Door County Hardware WILL be forced under within 1 year of the supercenter opening it's doors.

You see, Walmart is unique in the business world, NOT because of it's size, but because of it's tactics. #1 - They build within a community for the express purpose of taking over and driving out ALL competing stores, even if it means they lose huge amounts of money doing it. #2 - With the application by walmart to the FDIC and Federal Banking Commision, the plan is starting to show. FIRST, they branched into groceries. SECOND, they branched into gas and auto service. THIRD, they want to branch out and start their own bank.

See a pattern? They are attempting a MONOPOLY! They want to compete in every aspect of commerce, driving out all others until they are the only business left anywhere. All stores everywhere will be walmart. If you're from the younger generation, ask your parents or other older person about MA BELL.
